Roshan's Space
Describe at least ONE character you enjoyed about in the text. Explain why the character helped you understand an idea in the text.

In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, one character I enjoyed reading about was Romeo. Romeo is the main character who helped me understand one the play’s main ideas, that revenge does have consequences.

Romeo is a young man who is part of the Montague family. At the start of the play he is romantically-linked with a lady called Rosaline, until he meets Juliet, the daughter of his family’s enemy - the Capulets. Romeo is an enthusiastic and passionate lover, but is also inexperienced.

Romeo’s main defining feature that makes him an enjoyable character to read about in the play is the fact that he is very impulsive. This characteristic is one of the foremost things that make the play enjoyable because all of his thoughtless decisions sped up the play’s pace and made it more exciting and suspenseful. There are several instances in the play that show this. One example of his impulsiveness is when he says “Did my heart love till now?” and “I ne’er saw true beauty till this night”, these lines show just how quickly he falls in love with Juliet. Also the quote “Direct my sail! On lusty gentlemen”, when he crashes the Capulet party without even thinking of the repercussions.  Even though these decisions were very rash, they were one of the things that made the play interesting and made Romeo an enjoyable character to read about.

Romeo also helped me understand one of the play’s main ideas, that there are bad outcomes of revenge. A good example that shows this is Tybalt’s death. After Mercutio is killed by Tybalt, Romeo makes an impulsive decision when he says “Fire-ey’d fury be my conduct now” before he kills Tybalt and gets revenge for Mercutio’s death. In that moment he is only thinking on impulse, blinded by revenge and is not thinking of the consequences of his actions. The consequences of this act of revenge are Tybalt’s death, Romeo’s banishment from Verona and his separation from Juliet. The overall consequence of revenge in the play is both the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. It could be argued that the plot is driven by the actions and decision s of characters such as Romeo but right from the start in the prologue, particularly the like “The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love” tells us that the end has already been decided and it’s the acts of revenge between the families and the consequences which derive from that, which leads to this. Both Romeo and Juliet are victims of the vendetta between the Montagues and Capulets. Romeo was the character that helped me understand the main idea because he was one of the central characters that suffered the most from the consequences of the acts of revenge in the play.

In the play Romeo and Juliet, the most enjoyable charter I read about was Romeo. Though he was brave and affectionate he also had many youthful flaws such as his aggression and impulsiveness, but these flaws are what made him enjoyable to read about. Romeo also made it easier for me to understand one of the play’s main ideas – the consequences of revenge, because his character was one of the most affected from the various acts of revenge in the play.
